Production & Filming for Crosscut’s ‘Made There’ Season 1

Background and Challenge

Crosscut, a prominent media organization, embarked on producing the first season of “Made There,” a series featuring small business owners and their stories of creating local craft, food, and beverage products that celebrate the Pacific Northwest. The series aimed to highlight the unique journeys and creations of these artisans, capturing the essence of their work and its impact on the community. Crosscut needed expert assistance with the production, particularly in the areas of filming and technical execution, to ensure high-quality content for the 5-7 minute episodes of the first season.

Solution and Execution

Crosscut enlisted JSB Video to assist with the production and filming of the first season of “Made There.” Our role focused on providing technical expertise and production support to ensure that each episode was visually engaging and professionally executed.

Each episode required close coordination with the featured small business owners to understand their unique stories and processes. For example, in the episode featuring Silver City Brewery, we documented the journey of the brewery’s founders, Scott and Steve Houmes, who established their business more than 25 years ago. The episode highlighted the brewery’s community involvement through their Silver Linings Series, where they partner with various organizations to create small-batch beers that benefit local causes. The narrative captured the sense of community, creativity, and camaraderie that defines Silver City Brewery. Similarly, for Beth Gordon of Cactus & Clay Ceramics, we captured the meticulous process of creating functional pottery pieces, her journey back to pottery after a decade-long break, and her efforts to promote sustainable and intentional living through her art.

The production process involved filming in various locations across the Pacific Northwest, each presenting its own set of challenges and opportunities. We utilized our expertise in capturing high-quality video and audio, ensuring that each 5-7 minute episode was visually appealing and told a compelling story. Our approach included detailed attention to the artisans’ environments, capturing the nuances of their craft and the personal stories behind their businesses.Our technical support included setting up and managing filming equipment, optimizing lighting and sound conditions, and coordinating with Crosscut’s production team to ensure a seamless integration of our work into the overall project.

Results

The first season of “Made There” was a success, with nine episodes that beautifully showcased the stories of local artisans. Each episode highlighted the unique contributions of the featured artisans to the Pacific Northwest’s cultural and economic landscape. The collaboration between JSB Video and Crosscut ensured high production quality and engaging content.

The measurable outcomes from the project were substantial. The series garnered a significant following on social media, increased viewer engagement, and positive feedback from both the audience and the athletes featured. The high production values and compelling content also attracted the attention of PlayersTV, resulting in the show’s acquisition and further expansion of its reach.
